Routine sonography by-and-large just shows the existence of organs, whereas doppler & colour doppler studies show the function of the organs. It's prime utility lies in studying the growth of the baby in the uterus, evaluation of blood flow, studying function of the heart, and detecting defects in the heart, and to some extent to know whether the tumor is cancerous or not.
