Hair growth is cyclical and not continuous. Anagen hair are growning hair, which grown for 3 years and account for 90% of the total hair. Catagen hair are in a transitional phase, which last for 1-2 weeks. Telogen hair are resting hair, which continue in this stage for 3-4 months. Afterwards they are pushed out by the underneath hair, or combing pulls them out.
There are many mis-conceptions regarding hair fall. Let us see what is normal hair fall. There are 1 lakh hair on scalp. Every person loses 40-100 hair per day. When it exceeds 120 it is considered abnormal. Generally, if you find more than 40 hair on your comb or on pillow or in the bathroom, your hair loss is more than normal.
Causes of hair fall:-
Heredity determines characteristics of colour, thick or thin, straight or curly. Premature greying and baldness is determined by genes.
Drugs like anti-cancer, blood-pressure lowering, oral-pills can cause hair fall.
Trauma (injury) in the form of tight-winding, pulling can aggravate hair loss.
Hormones like thyroid-disorders can make hair brittle and sparse. Generally, estrogen (female sex hormone) stimulates hair growth and androgen (male sex hormone) inhibits hair growth. Therefore, you see more bald men than women.
During pregnancy hair condition improves. Hair loss is seen 2-4 months after delivery.
