Suction Assisted Lipectomy (SAL) or Liposuctioning includes the new Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction (UAL).

This has two major uses in cosmetic surgery:-

1. Permanent removal of localized fatty deposits resistant to weight loss. For example, the saddle bags of the outer thighs of women and the love handles of men's waists.
2. Body contouring to improve the fit of clothes. This procedure can remove upto 5 quarts of fat when used as an outpatient procedure, and even more if the patient is hospitalized after surgery.

In both situations the use of Ultrasonic Liposuction always, in addition to SAL, facilitates removal of fat in fibrous areas such as the upper abdomen, back, pubic mound, etc.

The liposuction procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure under intravenous sedation or epidural anesthesia (like during childbirth). Saline plus local anesthetics are injected under the skin to diminish blood loss, reduce post-operative discomfort and enhance the effectiveness of the liposuction process.

As with all cosmetic surgery, it is best to achieve a stable weight, good nutrition, beneficial dietary habits and an exercise program before the procedure.
