What is Ringworm
Ringworm is a fungus infection of the skin. It presents as itching, round reddish patch that gradually increases in size.

Ringworm can occur in the groin and arm-pits, waist-line, hands and feet. Nails can also get infected with this fungus. Covered areas are often involved.

Fungus grows on outer dead skin cells. The outermost layer of our skin is made-up of dead cells. Wet skin is suitable for the growth of fungus. Perspiration in summer and wet clothes during rainy season are pre-disposing factors.

Obese individuals, diabetics, those who work in wet environment are susceptible to fungus growth.

Red itching rash is common presenting feature. Itching is more at night or when person is free. School children can present with hairfall, scalp infection and thick scales on scalp. This is commonly seen in remand homes and hostels.

Skin specialists can diagnose fungus infection by clinical examination. Skin scraping is done to confirm the diagnosis. Middle aged individuals are advised to check blood sugar levels if fungus is diagnosed.

Topical antifungal ointments are effective for localized infection. Extensive infection needs oral medication. Advertised products contain Salicylic acid in varying concentrations, which can burn the skin and leave behind black pigmentation. Self-application of Steroid ointments can reduce itching, but the fungus infection will not be controlled.

We have seen that fungus grows on wet skin. Hence prevention consists of keeping skin dry. Take bath twice a day. Use powder. Avoid wet undergarments. Use cotton clothes and avoid synthetics are a few of the steps.
